Boxing Day "Boxes" or "Boxing" theme

It's Boxing Day, and I've just had a great time presenting a Mixed Bag with Chris B, on 93.7 Edge FM in the Bega Valley.  My daughter Alison co-hosted the show for our Boxes (or Boxing) theme,  and she did a great job.  It was her first time presenting a radio show, and I think she's a natural!!

Alison talked me into playing one song that wasn't really my choice.  See if you can guess which one from tonight's playlist below!!

I'm looking forward to Corey Legge coming into the studio soon, and catching up on what's been going on for him.  Corey Legge and the Swamp Stompers (Corey on Electric Guitar, Lapsteel, Lead Vocals and Bass and Mitch Broadhead on Drums, Percussion & Backing Vocals) have just released a great EP with six original tracks.  I'm sure it won't be difficult to talk Corey into playing some tunes live in our Edge FM studio.  Corey has been busy studying at Southern Cross University in Lismore and putting his heart and soul into his music.  As soon as Corey lets me know which Wednesday night suits him to pay a visit to Edge FM, to join us on A Mixed Bag, I will let you know.

Hope you had a great Boxing Day today, and that you're enjoying the holiday season.

On a Mixed Bag with Chris and Alison, our playlist for the evening was:-
  1. Jukebox in Siberia - Skyhooks
  2. Little Boxes - Malvina Reynolds

Thursday 20 December 2012

Last night on a Mixed Bag with Chris B on 93.7 Edge FM in the Bega Valley, our theme was "doors", so we heard songs by the band, The Doors, as well as songs with the word "door" in the title.
The Salvation Army does a great job assisting people in need all year round, but particularly at Christmas.  Captain Dale Murray from the Salvation Army talked to me about The Red Shield Appeal (the annual door-knock appeal) which will be taking place in May 2013.  If you'd like to be involved, you can register to assist by either going on line, salvos.org.au, or telephoning 13 72 58, or making a local phone call to the Bega Salvation Army church on 6492 3332.  Here is a link to the brief interview with Captain Dale Murray.

Had a great afternoon at the Domedary Hotel in Tilba on Sunday afternoon.  Corey Legge and the Swamp Stompers (Corey Legge and Mitch Broadhead) played some dirty slide guitar and heavy grooves in the pub's barn in the beer garden.  What a great spot to see a band!

Watching the people watching the band, was almost as entertaining as watching the band!  The man in the rainbow coloured jumper tooting his car horn when he liked a song, and the lady in the blue dress who kept walking in front of the video camera when Corey's family were trying to video the original numbers!

Corey and Mitch played some fantastic new original songs from their upcoming EP, and some terrific covers (John Butler, Zavier Rudd, John Lee Hooker and other blues greats) with a few crowd pleasers from the 80's where the crowd appeared to know every word! (Hunters & Collector's, ACDC and a big finish with Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water).  It was a fantastic afternoon of blues with two very talented local musicians, Corey on guitars and lap steel guitar and Mitch pumping out the rhythm on drums.  If you get the chance to see these guys around the traps, make sure you check them out.

Hoping to have Corey on the show (as a live guest) in the New Year, so looking forward to him blowing the roof off the Edge FM studios!!

  5. Lloyd Spiegel live - Right Next Door
