Rodriguez

This Tuesday night on a Mixed Bag with Chris B on 93.7 Edge FM in the Bega Valley, we will be exploring the theme of Rodriguez.  I recently watched the DVD, "Searching for Sugarman", and really enjoyed the film.
I used to listen to our copy of Rodriguez's second album, Coming from Reality (on cassette actually), which I personally prefer to his album "Cold Fact", but that is probably because I am more familiar with the songs on that album.
On Tuesday we will hear songs from both albums, and we will probably throw in a few protest or political songs by other artists (perhaps Midnight Oil, John Butler, and Bob Dylan for starters).
So, if you live in the Bega Valley, tune in between 6.00pm and 8.00pm on 93.7 Edge FM.

Deborah's theme, Deborah Conway and Deborah Harry 12/06/2013

Last night on "A Mixed Bag with Chris B" on 93.7 Edge FM in the Bega Valley our theme was "Deborah's", mainly focusing on two of my favourite Deborah's - Deborah Harry and Deborah Conway.  On Mother's day earlier this year, I was lucky enough to attend Deborah Conway & Willy Ziggier live at Candelo Town Hall playing songs from their new album "Stories of Ghosts".  It was a fabulous night of music with a very enthusiastic Candelo crowd.  Deborah Conway and Willy Ziggier were both in excellent voice and Willy Ziggier played an array of instruments, displaying his versatility and amazing talent!  I can absolutely recommend this live show if you get the chance to check it out!

It was great to spin a few tunes on a Mixed Bag from the new album "Stories of Ghosts", and from my favourite older albums, "String of Pearls" and "Bitch Epic" mixed in with quite a few songs from the band "Blondie" with Deborah Harry on vocals.
I was lucky enough to be able to have a quick chat by phone with Deborah Conway while she was waiting to board a plane at Sydney Airport.  Here is the link to the interview (sometimes the sound quality isn't that great, so apologies for that):-

Am trying to decide what next week's theme should be.  Have just watched the documentary, "Searching for Sugarman about Rodriguez, so thought a Rodriguez theme could be good at some point.  I am also tossing up the idea of "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll", but can't decide at the moment.  Will keep you posted!

Merimbula Jazz Festival this Queen's Birthday Long Weekend 2013

Last Tuesday night on a Mixed Bag with Chris B on 93.7 Edge FM in the Bega Valley, our theme was jazz, and we heard jazz standards from great female singers like Billie Holiday, music from John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Dudley Moore and many other great jazz tunes.  We also heard music from local musician Paul Dion, and Melbourne musician Pippa Wilson, a regular performer at the Merimbula Jazz Festival every year.
I'm looking forward to going to the Merimbula Jazz Festival this year.  Here is a link to my interview with Bob Stevens from the Merimbula Jazz Festival committee, talking about what will be happening at the festival and about the great work of the volunteers.

I can highly recommend the Merimbula Jazz Festival, whether you are 8 years old or you are 80 years old - there is something for everyone.

Next Tuesday night on A Mixed Bag with Chris B, our theme will be Deborahs, so we will be hearing music from Deborah Conway, Deborah Harry with Blondie, and any other Deborah's I can think of!

So, if you live in the Bega Valley, tune in on Tuesday night between 6.00pm and 8.00pm on 93.7 Edge FM.
