Singers who are happy and gay

Last night on A Mixed Bag with Chris B, on 93.7 Edge FM in the Bega Valley, our theme was "Singers who are happy and gay", playing the music of great singers, who just happen to be gay or lesbian.
We briefly explored the history of gay rights in Australia, including laws referring to same-sex marriage around the world.  Some of the artists included in last night's playlist were K.D Lang, Janis Ian, Elton John, Peter Allen, Liberace and the Indigo Girls.
Next week, I hope to explore this topic further, especially the difficulties faced by young people who live in rural areas and maybe struggling with their sexuality.
Next week our theme will be "Brave, courageous and strong", and I hope to explore this theme more, especially the issues facing young people in the GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender) community living in rural areas, or rural youth who may be struggling with their sexuality.  I hope to explore the subject of people who have to be brave when faced with difficulties in their lives (being diagnosed with a terminal illness perhaps).

Last night's playlist included:-

  • I believe in love by the Indigo Girls
  • 21st century life by Sam Sparro
  • How could I ever know (from Secret Garden) Deborah Cheetham, Stephen Blackburn and Jonathon Welsh

  • As long as she needs me medley by Liberace

John theme

Last night on A Mixed Bag with Chris B, on 93.7 Edge FM, our theme was "John".  The program was more of a music program, rather than a program with information and an interview.  It's nice to take a break from that sometimes.
Rather than play all the obvious "John", "Johnny" and "Jack" songs, our playlist contained quite a few songs with "John", "Johnnie" or "Jack" in the lyrics, rather than in the title of the song.  The playlist also included some singers with the name John.  Songs included in the playlist were:-

  • It's my party - Lesley Gore
  • Don't take the girl - Tim McGraw
  • Elton John - Tiny Dancer
  • Johnny strikes up the band - Warren Zevon
  • Drag Race Johnny - Little Pattie
  • Come on Eileen - Dexie's Midnight Runners
  • New Kid in Town - The Eagles
  • Walk of Life - Dire Straits
  • Oh No John! No John! - The Red Army Choir
  • The Devil went down to Georgia - The Charlie Daniel's band
  • The Leader of the pack - The Shangrilas (woops! that was Jimmy not Johnny!!)
  • Jumpin' Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones
  • Johnny Loves me - Shelley Fabares
  • New York State of Mind - Johnny Matthis
  • John Paul Young - Yesterday's Hero
  • Uncle John's Band - The Grateful Dead
  • Hummingbird - Jeff St John
  • Bed of Roses - Bon Jovi
  • Do ya ken John Peel
  • Be Good Johnny - Men at Work
  • Johnny Will - Pat Boone
  • Zebra - John Butler
  • Cry, Cry, Cry - Johnny Cash
  • Other songs from Johnny Matthis to finish with.
Next week our theme will be Singers who are happy and gay!
